PhD position in climate change ecology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem

The Dryland Tree and Ecosystem Ecology Lab at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem has an opening for an outstanding and highly motivated PhD student in climate change ecology. The successful candidate will conduct research on dryland mechanisms of ecosystem functioning in drier and warmer climate. The project takes up the ideas and principles outlined in a recent perspective in Nature Ecology & Evolution (doi: 10.1038/s41559-022-01779-y, online view on the importance of dryland mechanisms for understanding climate change impacts in wetter biomes.

Project background and description: The project aims to assess thresholds of the activation of dryland mechanisms and their contribution to a series of ecosystem functions, such as plant growth, organic matter decomposition, carbon sequestration and nutrient cycling. These objectives will be achieved by a combination of field and lab experiments and analyses of online datasets. The candidate will join an established research group focusing on dryland and climate change ecology, and she/he will collaborate with partner labs in Europe. The successful candidate will gain experience in field measurements related to ecophysiology, ecosystem ecology, biogeochemistry, and various data processing technologies, such as online data surveys and advanced statistical analyses.

Candidate profile: Interested applicants for this PhD position should have (i) a Master’s degree in a related science field (e.g., ecology, physical geography, environmental science, or similar); (ii) high proficiency in English and excellent communications skill; (iii) a strong aptitude for scientific writing; (iv) ability to independent scientific work and time management skills; (v) experience in programming languages (e.g., R, Python, MATLAB).

Conditions and starting date: The successful candidate will receive a scholarship fully covering living expenses in Israel. Starting date is targeted for 1 November 2022 and no later than 1 January 2023.
