Secondary teachers statewide can learn the basics of global positioning and geographic information systems for use in their classrooms June 24-25 at Bismarck (N.D.) State College.
Designed for teachers of high school (grades 11 or 12) or college students, the Agriculture Data Collection workshop will provide information and hands-on experience in GPS and GIS equipment to teach these concepts.
At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to use a GPS receiver to collect waypoints, collect simple feature information and attribute data, transfer data and display it in a GIS and understand the value of spatial data for a manager.
Participants will create a draft version of materials from the workshop for use in their classroom and receive a CD with lesson plans.
They can also earn continuing education units.
Prerequisite knowledge includes being able to use Microsoft Word and Excel, use the Windows operating system efficiently, describe what a GPS will do and what a GIS is and demonstrate latitude and longitude.
