Philippines holds summer youth camp with lectures on GIS and GPS

The Mindanao Science and Technology Centrum Foundation will be holding its summer youth science camp on May 22-25, 2008 at the Science Centrum in Bago Oshiro, Mintal, Davao City.

The theme for the event is “Space technology education as a tool for agri-forest and watershed development.” It aims to orient and educate the youth on the relevance and uses of space technology in the fields of agriculture, forestry and watershed conservation and development.

Highlights of include nature trekking and a field trip to the Manambulan research center and science and technology park member laboratories. There will be lectures and workshops on space technology using GIS (geographic information system) and GPS (global positioning system) for sustainable development, radio isotope techniques and watershed management, impact of natural and man-made hazards to agri-forest development, computer-aided reforestation, technical report writing and science journalism.

The youth science summer camp will be held inside the five-hectare Mindanao Science and Technology Centrum, which is considered one of the largest such facility in the country. The centrum has various exhibits that help explain various scientific principles in the fields of chemistry, math and physics. It is part of the 1,000-hectare Mindanao Science and Technology Park which encompasses nearby science research facilities, the University of the Philippines Mindanao campus, the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Plant Industry and the Philippine Coconut Authority.
